Words, Collocations, and Technology: Teaching and Learning Vocabulary in the 21st Century
Abstract: Vocabulary is the foundational building block of any language. Though it may be difficult to convey accurate meaning without much grammatical knowledge, it is utterly hopeless to try to communicate without knowing vocabulary. This workshop will introduce participants to practical techniques and approaches to teaching vocabulary well. All of the methods and tools presented are based on sound findings from the field of second language acquisition. In addition to providing materials for teaching students, participants will be given valuable tools to help them efficiently learn useful Hebrew phrases for use in the classroom. This will help fellows with the often-difficult task of classroom management. Topics covered in this workshop include vocabulary-learning strategies, deliberate vs. incidental vocabulary acquisition, using collocations, and spaced repetition systems.
